Melrose High School is in its tenth year of offering Cross-Country, with 40 athletes joining the team. Cross-Country running is a fall sport in which runners compete in races against other schools to finish a course of about 3 miles for varsity, and 2 miles for non-varsity athletes. The course takes the runners over grass, woodlands, hills, though golf courses and the occasional mud. The Melrose Cross-Country Team is open to all 7 -12 grade students. An average season includes a dozen or so meets against opponents from other schools. Practices are held every day after school starting in August through mid-October.
At a Cross-Country meet, all runners get to participate and run the race regardless of ability, which makes it a sport for everyone to enjoy. The varsity team consists of the top seven runners in the school, in which the top five runners score for your team. Your team score is then the accumulation of the places of the top five finishers.
